Adjusting to Lingual Braces
Posted on 05/10/2024

There are a lot of different types of braces you can get from an IA orthodontic treatment clinic. In Bettendorf and Eldridge orthodontic treatment may include lingual braces. These braces are applied by Dr. Steven Mack of Mack Orthodontics. He has been helping kids, teens, and adults with their personalized orthodontic treatments for many years. If you have any questions about lingual braces, be sure to contact Mack Orthodontics.

How Lingual Braces Are Applied

Lingual refers to the fact that these brackets and wires are applied to the backs of the patient's teeth. Except where the orthodontic wire can be glimpsed between gaps in the teeth, lingual braces are practically invisible. When you or your child doesn't want the braces to be seen, the orthodontist can place the braces behind the teeth.

Lingual Braces Can Feel Weird

Your tongue constantly hits the brackets and wires on the backs of the teeth. Until you get used to how they feel and stop running your tongue along them, they will feel strange. The brackets can be slightly sharp unless you request that the orthodontist use rounded brackets with no sharp edges.

To make them a little more tolerable, you can use rolled bits of orthodontic wax on the brackets. The wax is pressed into the brackets to limit discomfort to your tongue. You can also use a topical pain gel that numbs areas of pain much like the numbing agent dentists use before working on teeth.

Saltwater Rinses and Anti-inflammatories

Another way to make lingual braces more comfortable, especially during the first few weeks, is to use a saltwater rinse or anti-inflammatory pain relievers. Mix a tablespoon of salt in warm water and swish around your mouth before spitting it out. It helps reduce inflammation. The medicine can help too.

Dealing with Discomfort After Adjustments

Like any other type of braces, you will have an adjustment made regularly. The wires may be tightened, or brackets repositioned slightly. If a bracket comes loose or the wire pops off, you will need to see the orthodontist handling your IA orthodontic treatment right away.

However the braces are adjusted or repaired, there will be some discomfort for a few days. Stick to the methods that work best for you as your mouth adjusts. As your teeth begin moving into the correct positions, the adjustments will be fewer and less uncomfortable.
