Can Adults Get Braces Too?

Fluoride & Your TeethUsually, when people hear the word "braces," they associate it with kids and teenagers. In fact, one of the most common questions we receive is: "Can adults get braces too?" And the answer is absolutely; it's never too late! Here at Mack Orthodontics, we offer a wide range of dental and orthodontic treatments for patients of all ages in Bettendorf, Eldridge, and Maquoketa, as well as other surrounding communities.

The reality is, braces have become so mainstream that now nearly 20% of braces wearers are adults. This is due to the fact that teeth straightening options have advanced and expanded - and because healthy teeth are capable of shifting at any age. Furthermore, since the alignment of your teeth isn't simply important for cosmetic reasons—it's linked to your overall dental health—you are truly never "too old" for braces. Orthodontic treatment options are an investment into a healthy future at all stages of life.

What are the Orthodontic Treatment Options for Adults?

We recognize that different patients will have different dental needs depending on their varying lifestyles. Therefore, we at Mack Orthodontics are proud to offer an array of orthodontic treatment options from braces to Invisalign that are all uniquely capable of reinvigorating your smile. You're able to choose between:

Metal Braces:

The most popular teeth-straightening, bite-correcting orthodontic option out there continues to be metal braces. Over the years, these classic braces have evolved to become smaller, increasingly efficient, and more comfortable than ever before.

Ceramic Braces:

Ceramic braces (a.k.a. clear braces) provide a far less noticeable method of treatment than metal braces because the brackets on the front side of the teeth are made of a translucent ceramic material that blends in with the tooth's natural color. As a result, this system of braces has become a favorite among adults because it is a lot less noticeable; though it can be less durable than metal braces.

Lingual Braces:

Lingual braces can be placed on the tongue side of the teeth, making them even less noticeable than ceramic braces. They work the same way that metal braces do, but since they are hidden behind the teeth themselves no metal is seen at all. Lingual braces aren't the right treatment for every orthodontic condition and they are significantly more expensive than standard braces, but if you want to straighten your teeth with the least visible type of braces then this could be the treatment for you.

The newest teeth-straightening technique on the market, Invisalign utilizes a series of clear trays called aligners that are formed to custom fit your mouth and adjust the placement of your teeth - no brackets or wires required. Another benefit of choosing Invisalign is that your aligners are removable, so there are virtually no food restrictions. You can easily maintain good oral hygiene, and you can even sparingly remove the aligners for important events.
