TADs, or Temporary Anchorage Devices, are frequently used in orthodontics to correct malocclusions of the jaws and make more effective, longer-lasting corrections to tooth alignment. Unfortunately, many orthodontic patients are reluctant to get TADs because they have heard things about these devices that aren't true. Mack Orthodontics, an Eldridge orthodontist, sorts out the common misconceptions about TADs for patients to reassure them it's safe.
Misconception #1: TADs Are Permanent
TADs are most certainly not permanent. The mere fact that they are referred to as "temporary" should eliminate that idea. Yes, they are screwed into bone, but no they don't stay there. As soon as they have done their job and you move on to the next phase of your treatment plan, the tiny screws are removed.
Because they are so small, the tiny holes in your jaw bones and gums quickly heal. Within a couple of weeks, it won't even show up on an x-ray as something that was there.
Misconception #2: TADs Constantly Hurt
TADs are initially uncomfortable because they are there to move your teeth or jaws into position. As your teeth and/or your jaws begin to comply, you won't hardly feel the TADs anymore. Additionally, the anchor screws are not drilled in such a way as to hit nerves inside the bones or gums. Ergo, you will not be in any level of pain that is intolerable.
If at any time in your orthodontic treatment with Eldridge Orthodontists, the pain in or near your TADs is insufferable, be sure to contact your orthodontist right away. TADs are not supposed to cause that kind of pain.
Misconception #3: TADs Cause Inflammation and Infection in Your Mouth
It is really impossible for TADs to cause inflammation or infection in your mouth. The tiny anchorage screws are made of dental and surgical-grade titanium. That's the same material used to stabilize broken bones until the bones heal.
The TADs are removed from sterile packaging prior to insertion, completely removing any possible chance of bacterial infection. Only poor post-op care or poor oral hygiene can cause problems. As long as you follow your orthodontic treatment from Eldridge Orthodontists, you should be fine.
Misconception #4: TADs Are Necessary for Everyone
TADs are only necessary where your Eldridge orthodontist indicates. Not everyone needs them. For severe bite and tooth alignment issues, they are necessary. An orthodontist might also decide that any patient who can't follow treatment plans and procedures well enough may need TADs.
Ask your orthodontist at Mack Orthodontics if you (or your child) will need these devices. Contact Mack Orthodontics in Eldridge for a consultation and a full exam for orthodontia.
