Avoiding Cavities With Braces

Whether through clear braces or traditional metal braces, getting orthodontic treatment sets you on the path towards a beautiful, healthy new smile. But in order to achieve that smile, you'll need to take great care of your teeth, and that means oral hygiene is more important than ever. Braces make your teeth more susceptible to cavities and dental decay, so here at Meister Orthodontics, as your Bettendorf and Eldridge, IA area orthodontist, we'd like to offer a few tips on how to prevent cavities while wearing braces.

Tips on Preventing Cavities with Braces

If you're currently getting treatment with braces, we're excited for you: after all, you're on your way towards a gorgeous new smile! But it's important to be vigilant. Follow these simple steps to help protect your teeth from dental decay and ensure successful treatment:

  • Brush at Least 4 Times per Day: During orthodontic treatment, you'll need to stick to a more robust oral hygiene schedule. You should brush your teeth at least four times per day while wearing braces - once after each meal and once before bed. You'll also need to use a floss threader to floss your teeth daily.
  • Mind Your Diet: And no, not for losing weight! You'll need to be careful to avoid certain foods that can damage your braces, during treatment, and we also recommend avoiding foods that are highly sugary or acidic, as these put your teeth at increased risk of cavities. Regardless, always make sure to brush your teeth after eating.
  • Carry a Kit: For optimal oral health, you'll need to be able to clean your teeth effectively while you're out and about. That's why we recommend creating a 'braces care kit' that has everything you need to clean your teeth and keep it on your person. You can include a travel-sized toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, elastics, dental wax, and other tools like an interdental brush.
