Braces can create a beautiful, straight smile for you. Mack Orthodontics offers many orthodontic treatment options, such as ceramic braces. Ceramic braces are a newer system of braces that provide the same service as traditional braces; however, they allow you to straighten your teeth in a much less noticeable way. At Mack Orthodontics, we can provide ceramic braces to patients at our three locations: Bettendorf, Maquoketa, and Eldridge, IA. Learn more today!

Different Types of Braces

Today, you can choose from several different methods to straighten your teeth, including: metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces, and clear plastic aligners. Metal braces are the most traditional type of braces utilized by orthodontists. They consist of metal brackets that are cemented to your teeth, a metal band connecting the brackets, and flexible elastics around the metal brackets. Ceramic braces are very similar to metal braces, except their material blends in with the color of your teeth. Lingual braces are similar to metal braces as well, but they are cemented to the tongue side of your teeth, appearing relatively invisible behind your teeth. Usually, lingual braces have slightly longer treatment times as well. Clear plastic aligners like Invisalign meanwhile, are a removable method of straightening teeth. Invisalign aligners are typically worn for the entirety of the day, but can be taken out when necessary like at meal times. Invisalign is typically used to treat mild or moderate orthodontic issues. For more severe situations, Invisalign may not be as effective as braces.

Why Are Ceramic Braces Different?

Ceramic braces work the same way as traditional metal braces, but they are much less noticeable on your teeth. Instead of metal, ceramic braces are made of a translucent ceramic material that naturally blends in with your tooth's coloring. Due to their incognito appearance, ceramic braces are becoming more and more popular among adults.

Benefits of Ceramic Braces

  • Less noticeable than metal braces
  • More aesthetically pleasing than metal braces
  • Movement of teeth is much faster than clear plastic aligners (Invisalign)

Are There Any Downsides?

  • Ceramic braces are usually more expensive than metal brace
  • Brackets are more prone to stains if patients do not adequately brush their teeth
  • Brackets can break more easily than metal brackets because they are less durable
