Lingual Braces

Orthodontic treatment has come a long way since the introduction of braces. What used to be thick, heavy, and unwieldy strips of metal have evolved into the slim, lightweight, and comfortable modern braces we know today.

As orthodontic technology has advanced, new treatments have developed as alternatives to traditional braces.

Some new treatments include clear braces, which use the same mechanisms as braces but are made from a clear ceramic composite material, and Invisalign, which does away with metal wires and brackets altogether and offers a discreet, aesthetically appealing way to straighten teeth. But while Invisalign and clear braces are both discreet and virtually invisible, there's one braces alternative that's truly impossible to see from the outside: lingual braces.

Straightening Teeth from the Inside Out

Lingual braces work just like regular braces and are still made out of metal. But, instead of the brackets attaching to the front of the teeth, lingual braces use specially-shaped brackets that attach to the back, or "tongue-side," of the teeth. This means that when your mouth is closed, they're completely hidden from view—totally invisible to anyone but you and your orthodontist.

Lingual braces carry all the same strength and reliability of traditional braces, but you'll never have to worry about having braces in pictures, at social events, or at presentations at work. However, along with these benefits, there are a few things to keep in mind. Lingual braces are significantly more expensive than traditional braces, and they take more time to get used to. That means that while your braces may not be visible from the outside, people may notice a temporary change in the way you speak immediately after you start using them.

Ultimately, whether or not these trade-offs are worth it is a matter of personal preference. Your orthodontist will talk with you in detail about the advantages and disadvantages of lingual braces before you commit to them, helping you decide what treatment method is best for your unique smile and lifestyle needs.
